The Jaipur Literature Festival, currently on in Diggi Palace, Jaipur, is hosting over 240 authors for debates and discussions on topics ranging from fiction to biography and history to music. This year, the 8th edition of the festival held in Diggi Palace features special symposia on crime and punishment, democracy, women and endangered languages. Entry to the festival, conceived by William Dalrymple, is free to all. The festival is billed as the Biggest Free Literary Festival on Earth.
Visitors can look forward to sessions like 'Story of a Death Foretold' with Oscar Guardiola-Riviera, 'Serendip' with Sri Lankan diaspora writers, Mahasamar with Narendra Kohli & Vartika Nanda and an insightful session on feminism titled 'The Essential Gloria Steinem', amongst others. Indrajit Hazara, Shovon Chowdhury and Bachi Karkaria will speak on 'The Language of Laughter'.
An exciting addition to the list is the 'Great American Novelist' Jonathan Franzen. The acclaimed novelist and essayist has received the National Book Award and was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The programme also includes two Nobel Prize winners, Amartya Sen and Harold Varmus.
Four Man Booker Prize authors Jhumpa Lahiri, Tash Aw, Alison Macleod and Jim Crace will grace the festival, along with six shortlisted authors for the 2014 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.
