A newspaper delivery boy Shivakumar has made it to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) - Calcutta. Shivakumar, an engineering student and the only educated member in his family, has fought hard to realize his dreams.
For the past decade, N Shivakumar's day always began at dawn, sorting newspapers and delivering them in his neighbourhood. But come June 16, he will begin his day on the campus of IIM-Calcutta, India's premier B-school. He had to wake up at 4 am, work till 8 am, then go to college and again return for his part time job. It was difficult but he was determined. The son of a truck driver, Shivakumar began selling newspapers in teenage to supplement the family income. A good student throughout, he got a seat in an engineering college in Bangalore. Shivakumar juggled work and academics in college and cracked the CAT in his first attempt.
Only three months ago, Shivakumar's father quit his job to maange the newspaper business. He is sad over his son moving away but cherishes his accomplishment. He has come a long way from delivering newspapers to actually being featured in them. Shivakumar plans to start an educational foundation after his MBA and offer support to others who dare to dream big.
