The prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has broken into the top 100 university rankings for the first time at number 87. IIT Guwahati is the only Indian educational institute in the 2014 league table of the Times Higher Education ranking (THE).
The IIT shares the 87th rank with Portugal's New University of Lisbon and Australia's University of Western Sydney. The annual evaluation of the world's top 100 which are less than 50 years old has a clera Eastern flavour with the Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea topping the list for the third time.
Out of the BRICS nations, Russia, China and South Africa have failed to qualify, giving all the more reasons for celebration that IIT Guwahati ranks among top 100. The rankings use the same parameters used by THE World University Rankings, but with a re-designed method to better assess the young institutions.
